Canada Music Week Celebration
2007 marked the 5th anniversary Contemporary Showcase Festival in Kitchener-Waterloo. KW ORMTA, NUMUS and KW Chamber Music Society joined Contemporary Showcase in a collaborative Canada Music Week Celebration. In addition, Grand River Region hosted two special features including Frank Horvat, Bass Impact and the CFMTA Cross Canada premieres.
Festivities opened November 17 with the KW ORMTA branch’s annual Canada Music Week Recital featuring our local students.
Local concert organization NUMUS hosted an intriguing evening with a tribute to James Tenney November 23 at the Maureen Forrester Hall, Wilfrid Laurier University with the Toronto Percussion Ensemble and guest pianists Casey Soko and Eve Egoyan. On the following evening, November 24, the KW Chamber Music Society hosted an all-Canadian concert at the Music Room, Waterloo. Local saxophonist Willem Moolenbeek and pianist Cheryl Duvall gave a sensational concert of music from Leonard Enns, Boyd McDonald, Srul Irving Glick, Murray Adaskin and E. Clare Stewart. Willem Mollenbeek’s warmth of tone and virtuosity made the tenor sax touch the souls of their audience.
During the November 24-25 weekend, Contemporary Showcase held their festival classes for students in strings and piano with adjudicator Terry Kroetsch and Linda Melsted at the Erb Street Mennonite Church. Over the past years the Showcase festival has caught the attention of many teachers, parents and students in our community – a festival we can no longer live without.
November 25 at 1:00pm Showcase opened with a delightful noon-hour concert sponsored with the generous support of the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund. Bass Impact, a local bass clarinet duo Tilly Kooyman and Kathryn Ladano featured works by Boyd McDonald, Peter Hatch, Todd Harrop and Aris Carastathis. This concert also featured the CFMTA “Cross Canada” premieres with special guests Darren Durocher (piano) performing Dance of the Loons and Arielle Fortier-Lazure (soprano) singing Lullaby of the Iroquis with accompanist Anita Noel. Darren is a second year performance major at Wilfrid Laurier University under the direction of Terry Kroetsch and Arielle studies voice with Anita at the Beckett School, Kitchener. Both students performed with impeccable preparation and professionalism. They gave the CFMTA premieres a well-deserved performance.
Contemporary Showcase is proud to be a part of Canada Music Week and host the CFMTA Cross Canada performances. The Grand River Region Showcase is run by a small committee of Helga Morrison (coordinator), Joanne Bender, Ilva Gierman and Owen Bloomfield.
